Digger’s Retreat Hotel is set in 5hectares of lush semi-tropical and park-like gardens bordering the Suid-Kaap River in the heart of the 1880’s Gold Rush area. Nestled amongst the oldest mountains in the world on Route 38, about 11 kilometers from the picturesque Lowveld town of Barberton, our historic and quaint retreat dates back to the 1930’s. Digger’s Retreat is a tranquil country hotel offering the whole family a perfect escape from the mad rush of life in the city. Awesome bushveld sunrises, sunsets, and the prolific birdlife provides everyone with a unique and memorable experience.
Our cozy getaway allows you to watch DSTV in the historicaltheme bar, main bar, or lounge, or to experience an outdoor fire in the stone braai area next to the lapa, or to enjoy the large inviting swimming pool. Play darts or pool in the pub and in the cooler months cuddle up with a glass of red wine in the lounge in front of the fireplace. Your “home away from home” has the biggest and oldest menu in Mpumalanga and offers a wide selection of scrumptious meals from pub lunches and light meals to a comprehensive a la carte selection, all of which can be enjoyed in the historic restaurant, or in the bars, or at the poolside lapa, or on the bougainvillea covered veranda. Experience the history and attractions of the surrounding area and explore the wonders of the nearby Kruger National Park. We arrange and customize excursions to suit all requirements.
Not many people in Southern Africa today know the interesting tale behind the wandering painter, Conrad Frederick Genal, who left behind him a trail of hotel friezes and church decorations from Northern Rhodesia (Zambia) through Southern Rhodesia (Zimbabwe) to Grahamstown. In the picture above some of his paintings can be seen clearly.
