Digger’s Retreat Hotel is set in 5hectares of lush semi-tropical and park-like gardens bordering the Suid-Kaap River in the heart of the 1880’s Gold Rush area. Not many people in Southern Africa today know the interesting tale behind the wandering painter, Conrad Frederick Genal, who left behind him a trail of hotel friezes and church decorations from Northern Rhodesia (Zambia) through Southern Rhodesia (Zimbabwe) to Grahamstown.  In the picture above some of his paintings can be seen clearly.
